Los Lobos - Tin Can Trust
Los Lobos’ first collection of new original material in four years— the quintet once again redefines itself and expands its scope, while never losing sight of where they come from. Tin Can Trust is an album that speaks to the time and place in which it was conceived; the album’s title can be traced back more than a century, but for the band, it’s apt for the rickety state in which so many of us find ourselves—and our world—today. Seven songs on the album are Hidalgo-Pérez collaborations, including the opening track “I’ll Burn It Down,” which features a guest vocal harmony from blues-rocker Susan Tedeschi. Three others were written in whole or in part by Rosas – including the album’s two Spanish-language numbers: the cumbia “Yo Canto” and the norteño “Mujer Ingrata” – and display Los Lobos’ signature seamless infusion of Mexican folk songs into rock music. Also included in Tin Can Trust – a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “West L.A. Fadeaway” – offering a nod to the bands’ shared history that extends back into the 1980s when the Angelenos befriended and opened shows for their northern peers.

Elvin Bishop - Red Dog Speaks
Win it here!
Listen: Many Rivers To Cross
When Elvin Bishop moved to Chicago from Tulsa in 1960, it was ostensibly to study physics at the University of Chicago, but he was really there to learn the blues, knowledge he shows to good effect on Red Dog Speaks, out June 15th from Delta Groove. The album marks 45 years of his recording career. One of Bishop's most important teachers in the ways of blues guitar was Little Smokey Smothers, who became a lifelong friend. Smothers, a Mississippi native, had also arrived in Chicago as a teen, in 1956, and was soon playing with the likes of Otis Rush and Howlin' Wolf. Bishop recalls meeting him at the Blue Flame "around the corner from Muddy Waters' house. He was a full-grown musician, and I was just starting out. He was nice enough to take me under his wing." Some of Smothers' teaching methods were unorthodox. "If I wasn't concentrating," Bishop says, "he'd have a pot of beans or ham hocks or something really good cooking. He'd take me in the kitchen and lift up the lid and he'd say, 'Smell this.' And I'd say, 'Oh wow, that smells great!' and then he'd say, 'When you get this song right, you can have some!'" Needless to say, Bishop did, going on to play with The Paul Butterfield Blues Band and becoming a solo star in his own right.

He is backed by a crew of seasoned players with a collective century of studio and concert experience: background vocalist Vicki Hampton, bassist Anthony Setola, lead guitarist Bryan Ewald, drummer Tony Morro and Hammond B-3 organist/pianist Larry Hall. Apparition was recorded live off the floor with minimal overdubs at Nashville’s Blackbird Studios, the ground zero recording facility for the city’s rock community thanks to fellow habitués like Kings of Leon and Jack White. It was co-produced by SPB and producer, songwriter and drummer David Huff (a former member of the group Giant) and mixed by recording veteran Jim Ebert (Butch Walker, Jason Falkner, Cowboy Mouth, SR 71).

Steve Cropper and Felix Cavaliere - Midnight Flyer
Listen: I Can't Stand It
Contest winners will be announced soon!
Steve Cropper, guitarist for Booker T. and the MGs and one of the primary architects of the unmistakable Stax sound of the 1960s, and vocalist/keyboardist Felix Cavaliere, the voice of the Rascals and the pivotal figure in the blue-eyed soul movement of that same era, have reconvened for their second collaborative recording. The album has a range of styles and shades, from heartfelt ballads like “When You’re With Me” to the soul-charged “I Can’t Stand It,” a churning vocal duet featuring Cavaliere and his daughter Aria. “Sexy Lady” harkens back to the soul stylings of the ’70s, while the funky instrumental “Do It Like This” digs into a tight groove and makes plenty of room for Cropper’s tasty riff work to close out the set.

Craig Maher - Propel
Contest winners: David Birmingham (Fairfield, CA), Susan Nielsen (Mount Vernon, WA), Melissa Vo (Pittsburg, PA)

A fixture in the Metropolitan rock scene for the past ten years, Craig Maher coins his music, “Cosmic Contemporary”; a style that simply draws from his diverse musical background and influences that range from the Cosmic: the best of the 60's and the early 70's rock scene and its ties to Eastern music, Mysticism, and spirituality; and the Contemporary: anthemic rock championed by artists such as U2, David Bowie and Lenny Kravitz. This album should appeal to fans of the major guitar rock zeniths from the last four decades, ranging from the psychedelic explosion of the Woodstock era, to the riff-oriented glam and grunge scenes of the late 80s and early 90s, all with a contemporary edge that sits fittingly in the modern rock landscape.

Curran wrote or co-wrote 12 of the album's 14 tracks. Tracks such as "Tough Love" and "Lusty Li'l Lucy" show the influence of Little Richard and Chuck Berry, while the title track - with its refrain, "She Stole My Heart and then She Blew This Town" - pays homage to girl groups like the Shangri-Las and The Ronettes. "Baby You Crazy" recalls The Sonics at their loudest. Nick's previous release, Dr. Velvet, garnered the 2004 W.C. Handy Award (now known as the Blues Music Award) for "Best New Artist Debut." In 2008, Curran performed four songs on the mega-hit HBO series "True Blood." All Music Guide called him "one of the most authentic and exciting roots musicians of his generation."

Michael Franti and Spearhead
The Sound of Sunshine

THE SOUND OF SUNSHINE was conceived after Franti was hospitalized for a ruptured appendix in August 2009. “Music is sunshine. It gives us new energy and a stronger sense of purpose. You can’t hold it in your hands, smell it, taste it or even see it, yet somehow just coming together and feeling these little vibrations that tickle our eardrums can somehow lift us all up out of our most difficult moments in life to unimaginable heights,” says Franti.
