Wilner “Wil B” Baptiste (viola) and Kevin “Kev” Marcus Sylvester (violin) are Black Violin, the acclaimed duo who blend classical and hip hop. On-stage Kev & Wil are joined by a drummer and turntablist, transforming their recordings into a live concert experience. To capture the essence of their live shows, they filmed a music video for a remix of their latest single, “Magic” during a stop on their tour at Durham, North Carolina’s historic Carolina Theatre. “Magic” was remixed by Jason Nevins, known for his work with such varied artists as Run-D.M.C., Duran and Duran, Florida Georgia Line with Nelly and others.
Black Violin chose Durham to involve the participation of the organization Kidznotes. Kidznotes provides 10 hours of music instruction a week free of charge to students in grades from kindergarten through 7th in the Durham/Raleigh area. Black Violin often visits schools to perform and speak about the importance of music education; the band played to over 100,000 students last year alone. While in Durham, they invited children from Kidznotes to perform with them, having played a larger show exclusively for school children earlier that day with over 1,800 kids in attendance.
The band has also collaborated with Wu-Tang Clan, Linkin Park, Wyclef Jean and Alicia Keys, and performed for President Obama at his prestigious second inauguration. Their album Stereotypes is out now.
